About the blog
Steel Battle Chronicle started in 2016 as a two-person Discord arguing about giant robots. Today we're a small crew publishing three long-reads a week from a studio on Mountain Street, a five-minute walk from the Powerhouse Museum.
We finish every campaign before we score it, we buy our own copies, and we tell you when a genre isn't for us so our verdicts actually mean something.
How we review
We log first impressions across the opening 3–5 hours, noting performance on both a launch console and a mid-range PC before any opinion sets in.
Every main campaign is finished — and for live-service or roguelike titles, we invest a minimum of 40 hours before writing a single line of the verdict.
A second editor replays the sticking points, we verify patch notes and accessibility options, then fact-check pricing and Australian release timing.
We publish the full write-up, then return after major patches or DLC to update the verdict so the review stays honest months down the track.
What we cover
Build orders, loadouts and boss-pattern breakdowns for Armored Core, Zone of the Enders and every giant-robot game we can get our hands on.
Weekly features on Australian and NZ studios — from Melbourne pixel-art shops to Perth solo devs shipping their first Steam page.
Our flagship 3,000-word reviews — completion-first, spoiler-tagged, and updated after every major patch so the score stays accurate.
Arcade meet-ups, PAX Aus field notes and fighting-game locals from Ultimo to Newtown — where to play and who to watch.

"The Armored Core VI build guide got me through the Balteus fight after two weeks of wall-banging. Actual, tested advice — not copied patch notes."
"I trust their scores because they finish the game. When they said the sequel dropped off in act three, they were dead right — saved me $110."
"Their Indie Spotlight covered my tiny Perth studio before anyone else did. Wishlists tripled in a weekend. Genuine support for local devs."
"The weekly newsletter is the only gaming email I don't delete. Short, opinionated, and the Sydney meet-up listings are genuinely useful."
"Accessibility notes on every review is why I keep coming back. Knowing subtitle sizing and remap options before I buy is a game-changer."
"They revisited a review six months later after a big patch and bumped the score with a full explanation. That kind of honesty is rare."
